Representation of Women -Magazines

Women's Health Magazine

  • This main image of Karlie Kloss in minimal clothing takes up the majority of this cover which reinforces the idea that appearance is important and it promotes the modern day ideal body. The strap line on the cover says 'Head-to-toe Hot the one move that tones all over' which is used with the main image to give the impression that if you do this step, you will look like the woman on the main image. 'Women's Health' uses iconography as it is using an Instagram star, this will help to attract their audience as many young adults are familiar with instagram stars. The mast head 'Women's Health' addresses their target audience. The woman on the cover is wearing a sporty top with sporty shorts however the blazer that she has on top is uite formal. The magazine is primarily promoting womens health however the clothes and focus on body parts promote sexuality which shows that being healthy allows you to look like this. This links health to appearance and sexuality.
  • 'Women's Health' uses the stereotype that appearnace is important to women. This is shown by the majority of the copy which says 'Crush your fitness goals!' and 'Turn of your weight-gain hormones.' These headlines promote the idea that women should care about their appearance and that this magazine can help you too look like the woman on the main image as she has what is seen to be the ideal body and appearance. This is an outdated stereotype that is shown in many magazines. Another stereotype that is shown in this magazine is another outdated one. The headline 'Cook from scratch' reinforces the old ideology that women belong in the kitchen and that they should look after men and cook for them. In a mens magazine, the copy may give diet and healthy living tips however 'Women's Health' specifically says 'cook' which reinforces the stereotype.
  • "Women's Health' prrdominantly uses colours that are not associated with feminity and women. This gets rid of outdated ideologies such as women liking the colour pink. As well as this, the magazine predominantly uses women with this body type which shows what the modern day ideal body however it uses words like 'your' to give women more agency and shows that women want to look good for themselves rather than for men.
  • In this magazine cover we are told the myth that women care about their appearance and all want to be slim.  This is a myth as not all women aspire to look like the woman on the cover. Another myth that this magazine promotes is that this body shape is the healthiest weight and that you have to look lile this to be healthy. This is not true as people can not be stick thin but can still be completely healthy.
  • The stories in this magazines are all mainly consistent as they all talk about exercise and healthy living which all link to the idea of health.
