Vogue Cover Analysis
Vogue is a magazine aimed at women between 18-30's with an emphasis on fashion, makeup, beauty and pop culture. A common theme between the magazine covers that Vogue produce is that it poses the women featured in a goddess like way with their hair blowing wind and angelic-like lighting. This magazine idealises the people featured to create a role model like character with the strap line and main image combination. The strap line refers to Beyonce as 'electrifying' in order to give her a status and to give her agency as well as to show that she is in control. The use of 'electric blue' in her skirt and the out stretched hair show that she is full of energy and she is quite outgoing and confident which promotes an ideology of body positivity.
However, more negatively it still promotes a negative stereotype that pictures women as very simple minded and only interested in what the magazine features despite variance in character between women and women being more multi-layered than fashion, beauty, makeup and pop culture.
Another stereotype that is promoted is the idea that women are meant to be outgoing and quite extroverted which is shown by the use of bright clothing and open body postures as well as provocative clothing. This further promotes a quite narrow-minded ideology as if all women are similar however, it could be pointed out that this magazine might target outgoing women as their audience.
Vogue is shown to have many inconsistencies in their opinion on weight. They promote a feel good in your body ideology whilst promoting tips on how to lose weight and mainly featuring women of a similar body type. It also promotes a sense of change, which is open to interpretation from the viewer, whether that is assumed to be a change in relationships, weight or fashion is dependant on the viewer which is quite negative as it shows that Vogue is pandering to a female audience in the hopes to broaden the spectrum of people who consume this media. This ideology further promotes a sense of simple and narrow minded-ness which is quite damaging to the female image and could be seen as a step in the wrong direction when thinking about equality in representation of gender.
Vogue also contradicts the ideals of natural beauty by promoting the 'best new make-up brands' creating a sense of requirement for make-up which completely nullifies the ideology they believe to promote. Furthermore, Vogue aims to give women agency by featuring women of power and strength as well as of women of prosperity and success, however, it still feels required to dress the celebrity in question provocatively and seems to over sexualise the celebrity which is contradictory to the ideology created by Vogue.
