Question: Targeting different audiences
Essay: There are various ways in which Slumdog Millionaire has targeted different audiences. One of those being the promotion and the editing of the different posters in order to attract different audience types. Another is, the use of the narrative. The narrative itself is complex and non linear which means that they audience must work in order to figure out the plot to the film This type of narrative would appeal to the explorer and it is not a typical narrative and is not mainstream. The Indian setting adds authenticity to the film and could attract those that are from India and also others that are fans of Bollywood genres. There is an engagement with each of the characters as the audience, in a way grow up with the characters and experience what each individual character is subjected to in the film. There are tougher scenes within the film that will challenge people and will not be categorised as a scene from a typical romantic drama. The soundtrack from A R Rahman is also a way in which to target different audiences. Due to him also composing for many different films many are aware of his level of work. The soundtrack features songs from artists such as M.I.A 'Paperplanes' and The Pussycat Dolls with 'Jai Ho'. These songs will bring in a mixture of audiences ranging from mainstream pop music to indie music. The lack of stars in the film means that the main focus is for the director. The director Danny Boyle will pull in audiences who are fans of his work. These works range from Trainspotting to 28 days later.
