Text: Slumdog Millionaire
Question: Success and Responses
Essay: There is a certain criteria for success which includes positive reviews from crititcs, Awards, preferred reading has been met and cultural impact. The worldwide gross for this film is $377,910,544. It wasn’t expected to do win any awards due to the fact that it wasn’t particularly a mainstream film and didn’t have any stars. At the Oscars it picked up 8 Oscars including best picture and best director. It also won 4 golden globes and 8 Bafta's. Even though the film overall did have a huge win and was boosted into the limelight there was criticism towards its structure. Rotten Tomatoes features a mixture of positive and Negative reviews towards the film. For example, a negative reading of the film from SF Gate, Mick LaSalle November 12 2008. He is criticising the structure and points out that 'the movie unfolds in a stop start way that kills suspense, leans heavily on flashback and robs the movie of its velocity.' He also points out that 'by a wild coincidence the quiz shows questions, taken in order, correspond chronologically with the traumas in Jamal's young life.' The negative reviews shows that this person has not taken up the preferred reading and has made up an oppositional reading for himself.
