Biffy Clyro

Biffy Clyro

I've been somewhat forced to love Biffy Clyro.
You would get good odds on any band with the word 'Biffy; in its name becoming one of the planet's finest purveyors of intelligent hard rock; but Ayrshire's bearded heros are on the way to pulling it off.
It's Biffy's subtleties that have brought their occasional brushes with mainstream fame. Their album Only Revolutions was nominated for the 2010 Mercury prize, and the pretty single Many of Horror was requisitioned to serve as X-Factor winner Matt Cardle's Christmas #1. Many of Horror is different, simply because it's impossible to expunge thoughts of Cardle throughtout. Clyro have made no comments about this. They simply thrash on, dependable  rockers to the last.
Frequently, there's only the chorus to distinguish one song from another, but few would dispute the impact of 3,000 people emphatically singing "I'm a fire, and I'll burn, burn tonight".
The weird thing about them is that when I listen to their songs I feel like I'm jumping between time signatures like a frog evading a hammer, but more often than not, they're utterly brilliant. Biffy to tend to manfully resist the temptation to ruin all that loveliness that are involved within some songs by rocking out. Sometimes, they key to being really, really rock, is to not rock at all.
