Media Diary Week 6: Guilty Pleasures
A film that I've watched ever since I could remember would be one of my all time favourite Disney films 'The Lion King' (Released in 1994) which I would consider my guilty pleasure. From the first time I ever watched the film as a child, I was captivated by the idea that Lion's could speak, sing and they lived in there own little world. As a child I would say I was less embarrassed to watch this film as the target audience would be for around the ages of 4-10 but now whenever I secretly whip out my own dvd, I make sure it is in the comfort of my own bedroom with the door slammed shut and the volume low to make sure nobody hears the cheery tune of 'I just can't wait to be king'.
For me, The Lion King would not be the usual type of film that I would consider watching as animated cartoons are not something that I am necessarily fond of. However, unsure of what it actually is, the second the film starts i cannot help the smile that spreads across my face. Primarily, I would say that this film was targeted towards the mainstreamers as during it's time of release it was a very popular film that everybody wanted to watch and even recently they made a Special Edition of The Lion King so there was a big hype about the film around that time also. Baring this in mind, as I consider myself as a Reformer I would say that I watch this feel for enlightenment and to just basically feel good and escape the stresses of my everyday life rather than watching it just because everybody else is. As a Reformer I feel as though my choices in films, music, Tv shows and other things can be quite diverse as I don't like things just because others do. As a strong minded person I can consume a text without being bothered about what other people and not let their opinion influence my own because if I like something, I like it and I value my own judgement. For instance many of my friends find my film collection quite unusual as I have films such as, The Lion King and Monsters Inc all the way to Horror Genres like Saw and A Nightmare on Elm Street. My music taste is very much similar going from Pop bands like One Direction to post Hardcore genres like Sleeping With Sirens.
I would say that I take preferred reading to this text as I enjoy it for what it is and am not slightest bit cynical. I understand that it is a children's film so they wont be using sophisticated words that some adults probably don't understand but that is what I love about the film. It is just a simple, lighthearted film that you can just switch on, watch and sing along without it going into to much depth that you have to wreck your brain trying to understand.
Entertainment and escapism being the main reason I watch this text as I could just switch it on when i'm bored and when it's finished and can plug my earphones in and listen to the soundtrack that I shamefully downloaded on my phone and mumble along to when i'm out and about despite wanting to sing 'Hakuna Matata' at the top of my lungs. Although it sounds quite silly, You could say that you personally identify which the Lion Characters also because as a teenager, we all have those over protective parents that only want the best for us however being stubborn, we rebel and do our own thing. One of the main appeals I have to this film would be the humorous Characters and one liners throughout the film which i could be keeled over and laughing about for hours on end and find myself quoting the film throughout the day. This film also fulfils my needs of Love and Belonging as whenever I watch it, it takes me back to my childhood and how I always used to watch it with my family.
Overall, I would say that my love for The Lion King is something which has stayed with me ever since I was a child and I don't think that my Lion King phase will ever get old. It may be a film that would make my family disown me if they caught me watching but even I know that deep down the Elton John lyrics 'Can you feel the love tonight' are sitting on the edge of there tongue dying to burst out. So yes Lion King is my guilty my Guilty pleasure and i don't care who knows, except my family and friends and maybe the rest of the human race.
