Uses & Gratification

The Big Theory is the first text that I am going to analysis, it is an American Sitcom focusing around four young scientists and their friendship. The show fulfils three different gratifications, entertainment, personal identity and social interactions. Its sole purpose is to entertain its audience and to make them laugh by making the characters lives more interesting and the situations they get themselves into a whole lot funnier than normal life. As each character studies a different kind of science and have no idea how to talk or interact with the opposite sex it somehow creates also a sense of person identity as there will be people out there whether they are scientist or not who will struggle to talk to the opposite sex. This is just one of the many things that the sitcom does to create a sense of personal identity with the audience. However although the main purpose is to make people laugh it also uses Social Interactions from the Gratification Model. This is due to the fact that it is such a well known show fit to every age group and every kind of person, this causes discussion. Also as the show is set in modern day society people try to recreate scenes that have happened in the show. Also as the new series has just came out this will get people talking about it through all social media sites and through word of mouth. This all fulfils the Social Interactions theory from the Gratifications model.

Orange Is The New Black is the second text that I am going to analysis, it is an American Comedy Drama only on Netflix, and based off a true story. Just like the Big Bang its main purpose is to entertain its viewers however also uses their use of story lines to shock people and maybe somewhat relate to their characters. Some of the story lines in the show are so unbelievable that they have to true! As each character has their own individual story and own individual personality it creates humour watching them all together and watching them bounce of one another. Characters like Crazy Eyes ass humour to the show as even the name she has been given makes you laugh. Apart from entertaining the show helps you escape from the normality of real life. Many people watching the show have probably never been to prison and don't know how they would cope if they were to be in there themselves, as each character has their own personal identity it helps the views relate to each character and put themselves in their shoes. Again, the show has been a large success and causes a lot  of people to talk about it. When the new series of the show came out this year social media sites where filled with people commenting on the new series, me myself watching it in two days. It causes discussion as it is based on a real story and something that many people have not seen before.
