Media Diary: week 5

Doctor Who

I believe that the Sci-fi TV series Doctor Who fulfils the gratification for Entertainment. The story of Doctor who is an alien known as the Timelords, but "The Doctor" is the last of his race. Now inhabiting Earth he gains a companion to join him on his adventures through time and space using "The Tardis" to do so. Did I also mention that it's bigger on the inside than the outside?
I think that this TV series caters to the gratification of Entertainment with a hooking story which hangs on throughout the each season. Memorable characters who never leave us even after their departure as well as the clever humour that always makes us chuckle. This TV series isn't intended to fulfil our Personal Identity, Information or Social Interaction needs, as it isn't a reality show nor a documentary but we can learn some things from this program as it's a Sci-fi series so we will slightly pick up small things from the series, but this isn't the intention of the program. Viewers could relate to the characters in the series but these characters always end up in impossible situations, so relating to these characters isn't the main intention of the series. As for socialising it's possible to socialise about this series as everyone who watches this program would want to talk and socialise about this program. But this isn't the full intention of the TV series. I feel that this series targets the "Mainstream" audience as it's a very popular TV series and would attract this audience because of it's popularity and reputation.

Indie game-the Movie

I believe that this documentary about a group of game makers fulfils our gratification for Information. This is because this documentary shows us the a couple "indie" game designers who throughout the movie we watch them go through the ups and downs of making their games and how they made them. This fulfils our gratification for information as it gives us inside detail about how and why these selected few made their games and what they had went through and had to sacrifice to do so. I don't think that this documentary isn't intended to fulfil our Personal Identity, Entertainment or Social Interaction needs as these aren't the intended gratifications what was aimed by this film, and because it's a documentary this is especially aimed at the information gratification due to it's genre of film. I feel that this film targets the "Explorer" audience as it's a very different type of documentary, as well as it looks at not a very popular genre of game that being indie games. As well as a growing game category and not that popular this is why I'd think that the explorer is the target audience.
