Media Diary 5
This week I watched
a programme called the apprentice. This programme is mainstream because it
targets people who just like to watch people argue and like to watch people
make fools of themselves. The mainstream tends to like the reality programmes
and this is one. The point of the show is to find Alan Sugar a business partner
but they have to do a series of activities to win. If they fail they get fired,
simple. What makes this programme interesting though is the comedy involved in
it and you can watch people fail at what they are supposed to know about.
This programme
used to be targeted at the aspirer because of the business involved in it but
over time as more people watched the programme decided to make it more about
the activities and humour which made it change to the mainstream audience.
Another media
text I consumed was Doctor Who. This is also aimed at the mainstream because it
is a sci-fi programme. Sci-fi programmes tend to be aimed at the mainstream. The
programme has been going for 52 years and has always been part of the
mainstream. It targets people that are aged 12+. This is because of the so
called scariness that the show has which has gone down but can still be there. This
targets this age because it was originally a children’s T.V show and now that
they have grown up they still like it and pass it on to their children. It was
for children but the adults seemed to like it to and then the show was targeted
at both the children and the adults and it hasn’t changed since but still
works. Even when it was brought back in 2005 it hasn’t changed and is still a
family show.
