Media Text: Doctor Who ‘Rose’
episode
Defining a
‘Target Audience’
A target
audience is basically a group of people who you aim a certain product or item
at due to them having similarities or similar interests these similarities can
consist of income, political stance or even just who your role model is. I will
use 4 models to identify what audience Doctor Who is aimed at.
The income
Status model
Within the income status model there are many
levels they basically all mean the amount of money you have and level of
education dictates your interests.
Out of this
model I would say that Doctor Who is aimed at the working class and the people
at the lowest level of income so that will be D and E. I believe this since the
people at the lowest level on the income status model tend to be the youngest
and Doctor who is aimed directly towards teenagers or even children. I included D also because Doctor Who is
broadcasted at 7:30 in the afternoon (when majority are home from work) due to
this I believe that it could be aimed at working people also.
Rubicams
4C’s
Rubicams
4c’s basically shows how there are 7 types of people in the world, these people
differ a lot therefore this can help people use them as a method of audience
classification. Doctor who I feel would appeal to 2 of the 7 types of people in
the world and they are as follows, the mainstream and the resigned. I think
this because Doctor Who has been on the air for literally decades and therefore
has a really powerful fan base behind it, this makes it mainstream however each
episode follows a similar trend making the resigned enjoy it as there may not
be any shocks to them making the experience enjoyable as well as knowing there
will always be a happy ending.
Audience
Profiling
Audience
profiling is when you separate an audience due to their traits and interests
and I have chosen two of these categories for Doctor Who they are as follows,
egotists and groupies. I have chosen egotists since they are a group of people
who want to make their lives as good as possible, leading me to believe if
there is a TV show as popular as Doctor Who they are likely to at least try it
in case it does in fact make their lives better. I also chosen the groupies
since a lot of people really like the show and that make the show part of the
‘water cooler conversation’ making me believe that they may watch the show so
they can be a part of the conversation.
