reception theory

this text is aimed at 16-18 year old's, because the TV series depicts the two years of different groups of friends in college, because it addresses a lot of key issues that teenagers face on a daily bases which could suggest it is a form of comfort for the audience to know that someone else is going through the same problems as them.

it displays a unrealistic party the party is unrealistic in the way the camera angles are, in every other sense it is quite real because parties are unpredictable. this text is also aimed at middle class teenagers because of the way the characters are dressed and the furniture and size of the house.it is not gender specific due to their being an even number of male and female characters.the group that would have a preferred reading would be teenagers, mainly 16-18 due to the fact this text coincides with they're life as the text follows teenagers through they're two years of college, which the audience would be to. they would be going under the same pressures as the characters, they would find this show appealing because all the teenagers are shown as defiant of authority which is what a lot of the young generation are.

someone who is 40-50 would have an oppositional reading of this text due to the fact they went to college at a different time, when they went to college sex, drinking and drugs wouldn't have been as relevant as it is now, we live in a youth culture that some may say has been built around sex which produces these kinds of texts, where its just a load of good looking people partying and that is appealing because the 16-18 age group aspire to be like that. that is why someone of a different age group would have different feelings towards this, they would see this as extremely shocking where as the younger generation has been desensitised to it, that is why they accept this controversy easier than other age groups. someone of a different age group can understand what teenagers are like because they once where one so they will have had the same feelings or ideologies as the 16-18 age group because they where once a part of that group. but they would disagree with the ideologies put by this text because this text shows drugs without consequences, unprotected sex and drinking and driving. which the oppositional reader would view as bad influences on the younger generation.

someone who has a different ethnic background may have a negotiated reading due to this being based on British culture. for example someone of a Chinese background would be shocked by this text and wouldn't understand it due to the fact they haven't grown up in the same culture, and wouldn't have been brought up with the same ideologies, in Asia authority is taught to be very serious, where as the British youth are rebellious as displayed in this text, and it is appealing to do anything they're told not to do, one character "Anwar" depicts how british culture and teen life has interfered with his parents ideologies and his religion

the audience would use this text as a form of entertainment, it is fictional therefore the audience can use it as escapism from real life, it could also be used as a sense of empathy due to the characters face the same problems as the audience so it is easy to  identify with. the text is popular among its audience therefore it would be talked about and is a form of social interaction, it also could be socially interactive in the sense that it could change a large amount of peoples ideologies.
