Name of the text: Benny
“little games”
Date/time: February 2015
Where did you find it: YouTube
Genre: music video
What is the purpose: this
song was written and the music video was made to change people’s minds about
defying gender roles. It showed young girls and boys being ridiculed and
rejected for things that seemed pathetic like reaching for a Barbie, however
there was reality in it considering the amount of times a child has reached
for a toy not specified to their gender
and the parent has taken it off them.
Institution producing the
text: a 15 year old boy made this project for media studies but it got out on YouTube
and became well known.
Target audience: the target
audience was those who want to defy gender roles, this doesn’t have to be on a
huge scale it could be as simple as a boy who wants to wear make up or a girl
who likes to wear boy clothes.
Your reaction to the text: I
thought it was incredibly moving and shocking that it was made and written by a
15 year old boy, it was inspiring and I thought very brave and honest.
Why people consume the text:
its different, not many songs of this generation have a lot of meaning behind
it, and the fact it was made by a young boy who had such a grasp of the
problems people go through with gender
Could some people react in
different ways to the text? How?: some people could see this as controversial
considering it is about a very delicate issue and it is very boldly expressing
personal ideologies, people of a different generation who grew up with different
ideologies may not find it controversial but may find it odd, because it
completely disagrees with everything they’ve been taught, which means they
would have an oppositional view where they understand what the text is trying
to get across but disagree with its ideology.
