Name: Pretty Little Liars

Where did you find it?: Netflix

Genre: Drama

Target Audience: Teenagers

Institution producing the text: ABC

What is the purpose?: To take away my social life..

My reaction to the text: Loooooooove it!!

Why would people consume the text?: People would consume this text if they're wanting an exciting, intense journey & an escape from reality. They would do so if they were willing to give their social life up as it is that addictive and also any time they have, including sleep time. No regrets though; I love it.

Media Diary - Week 2

Name of the Text: The Office (US)

Date/Time: 5th October at 10pm-1am

Where did I find it?: I was a fan of the original U.K version of the television show and then two years ago decided to watch the U.S version because my dad told me about it.

Genre: Comedy, Sitcom, Mockumentary

What is the purpose?: The purpose of The Office is the primarily entertain the audience with its loveable and hilarious cast of characters. The plot lines in The Office are a perfect blend of laugh out loud - sometimes cringe worthy- humour and heartwarming relationships which is refreshing for a 30 minute comedy. Also the mockumentary style of the show gives it a very unique feeling and it truly makes you feel as if you are invading a persons work space and seeing the true workings behind an office. I do not think this show is aimed at the aspirers or innovators, but more aimed at a Mainstream audience as office work is such a common job, especially in the U.K & U.S that it would be easily relatable and enjoyable by many.

Institution producing the text: NBC

Target Audience: The primary audience member for The Office would most probably be a male as a large percent of the main cast are men and the plot points tend to be directed towards things that men face in life rather that women. A person who is aged from late teens to early thirties, I believe would be the target age range for a show like this. This is because the plot and comedy used is not overly sophisticated and can be relatable to people who are teenagers but also the age of the characters and some of the plot points cover more adult issues that would only be relatable to people of an older age.

Your reaction to the text: The Office is one of my all time television shows. The way the show is shot, the clever plot lines and the hilarious and unique characters add together to make a truly incredible show that I believe everyone should watch. In my opinion The Office only gets better as you continue to watch the series, if you only consume one episode the behaviour of the characters may be perceived as unlikely or ridiculous, but as you progress through you become attached to the characters on screen and tend to root for them despite some of their mistakes.  The humour is unique and incredibly funny and I will definitely be re-watching this show soon.

Why would people consume the text?: People would primarily consume this text to be entertained and for a form of escapism. The way in which the show is filmed acts gives it an almost reality show type of feel to it as nothing feels forced, so The Office allows for people to escape into another world that is still relatable to themselves. The Office has become, after 9 seasons, an television phenomenon, so people may also be inclined to watch the show to be included in social situations where The Office is discussed and to find out what all of the hype is about.

Could some people react in different ways to the text? How?: Yes, some people may not find The Office enjoyable to watch. Firstly, they may not find the humour in the show funny, they may not be fans of slapstick or sarcastic humour which would cause them to find the characters and show unfunny. Also, their is a significant amount of offensive humour presented to the viewers including racism, sexism and discrimination of certain religion. This, while done for the purpose of comedy, may cause people to steer away from the show as they feel personally victimised or offended by some comments made in the show.

Name of the text: Benny “little games”

Date/time: February 2015

Where did you find it: YouTube

Genre: music video

What is the purpose: this song was written and the music video was made to change people’s minds about defying gender roles. It showed young girls and boys being ridiculed and rejected for things that seemed pathetic like reaching for a Barbie, however there was reality in it considering the amount of times a child has reached for  a toy not specified to their gender and the parent has taken it off them.

Institution producing the text: a 15 year old boy made this project for media studies but it got out on YouTube and became well known.

Target audience: the target audience was those who want to defy gender roles, this doesn’t have to be on a huge scale it could be as simple as a boy who wants to wear make up or a girl who likes to wear boy clothes.

Your reaction to the text: I thought it was incredibly moving and shocking that it was made and written by a 15 year old boy, it was inspiring and I thought very brave and honest.

Why people consume the text: its different, not many songs of this generation have a lot of meaning behind it, and the fact it was made by a young boy who had such a grasp of the problems people go through with gender

Could some people react in different ways to the text? How?: some people could see this as controversial considering it is about a very delicate issue and it is very boldly expressing personal ideologies, people of a different generation who grew up with different ideologies may not find it controversial but may find it odd, because it completely disagrees with everything they’ve been taught, which means they would have an oppositional view where they understand what the text is trying to get across but disagree with its ideology.

Once Upon A Time

20th of September 2015, 20:00PM

I found this program on Netflix.
The genre is adventure, romance and fantasy.

The purpose of this series is to entertain, it lets you dwell into the fairytale world and free your imagination to run wild. It provides us with an insight to the fairytales we were told as children, however with a twist. its not the usual tales we were read to. These stories tell the truth.

This popular Netflix original series is targeted at the Explorers. This series is a different twist to the usual adventure/ romance programs. The explorers seek new and unusual things and Once Upon A Time provides exactly that. It explores all different aspects of genres and brings fairytales to life.

Once Upon A Time is my personal favourite series. Its brilliant as it brings our childhood to life. Each episode ends on a cliffhanger in which makes us want to find out what happens, either watch the next episode or even wait for the new episode to be released.

people would watch this if they love adventure mixed with romance and fantasy. Viewers who love these three genres combined with fairytales will have the best night in.

Some viewers who do not enjoy fantasy may not be enjoyed watching this. The series is full of costumes, magic, arguments and battles. Viewers may rather sit down and watch a movie or leave the magic wands and pick up a newspaper instead. The show is not for the faint hearted which makes a viewer switch over.

Media Diary Week 2

Recently I've been watching a short fashion series on YouTube called "Future of Fashion with Alexa Chung." The latest episode I watched was titled  "How Do You Become A Fashion Designer". I came across this series when I did my usual browse through Vogue's YouTube channel to only find the trailer for the series and every Tuesday since I've caught in with what Alexa's mission has been for that episode. The soul purpose of this series is investigate the most frequently asked questions about how to break into the fashion industry.

Vogue have produced this text to an audience of Aspires, mainly a demographic of young fashion students who are struggling to find their way into the fashion world. the Aspirer loves all things superficial and one of the most superficial things in this world is fashion. It can range from high-street to high-end. Mainly this documentary focuses on high-end with designers such as Balmain and Alexander McQueen.

As I have a love for fashion and documentaries, combing the two makes my reaction ten times better, There is always something to take away from each documentary consumed and I feel so much as been taken out that I will hopefully benefit from later in life. I've always heard the phrase "fashion is an impossible thing to get into" however the documentary is out to prove this statement wrong, it is a real eye opener for young aspiring fashion lovers to achieve a goal that has always been said to be "unrealistic." From the moment this series began, I instantly fell in love. People may consume this purely to fill time, like I was in the beginning, but now I use to just to extend my love further and further for fashion and just to hear Alexa Chung's monotone voice, there's something about it that has a calming and humbling aspect to it. (P.S I highly recommend her book, such an amazing read.)

If somebody had a different reaction to me they would still see this in a positive light but look at it from a different perspective. They could have different reasons to be watching it. If viewed negatively all I would ask is, why were you on British Vogue's YouTube channel anyway?
