Target audience
The target audience could be aimed at the struggler since it gives them the sensation to escape reality while watching the television series, at one point in the series Walter and Jessie where both in a hard position with Walter having cancer and not having enough money for his family when he passes away and Jessie being in a hard position in life with his family thinking he is a pathetic drug addict who wont achieve anything in life, the struggler can relate to being in a hard position and it makes them feel sorry for themselves that they can't be in a better position in life. Breaking Bad can lead the struggler to believe that if a Science teacher with lung cancer and a pathetic drug addict with no intention to succeed in life can become the worlds best meth cooks then they can at least get their lives being in a decent enough position.
Another target audience could be the explorer, this is due to the explorer seeking out new experiences and the television series Breaking Bad is exactly what they need. Breaking Bad is completely different than any other series with a science teacher getting into contact with his ex student to cook the worlds greatest crystal meth what could be more original? Breaking Bad is the most heart pounding experience an explorer can watch with Walter having extreme choices to make such as; being their for his wife while his daughter is being born or delivering crystal meth to the workers of Guss to make millions in the year, this is such an experience the explorer would want to see since Guss makes it clear that if Walter doesn't deliver it on time then he never wants to see his face again.
Preferred reading
The encoders want to make you know through the television series that doing awful things for you're own benefit never helps you in the long term, Walter loses everything he had with at first he just wanted enough to be able to take medication to slow down the lung cancer and having money for his family to wanting to own his own meth empire as he quotes "Im not in the money business Jessie, i'm in the empire business". Due to Walter wanting to succeed being the best at something all because he sold a share of a business him and three friends owned for a small amount of money them becoming billionaires made him want to succeed. Walter ended up with money to give his son and daughter but in the end he lost everything, even his son didn't want to speak to him since he admitted over the phone he killed his sons uncle so that police would go after him instead to draw the neo nazis away from hurting his family. You could also say that the encoders want you to believe that having someone help you in a hard situation is better than doing awful things to temporarily make it better but make everything you worked on crumble. We know Walter could of just had help since the man he helped create a business with (grey matter) offered to pay everything for him and even offered him a job.
This media text celebrates that breaking the law isn't the right way to succeed in life and it just puts you in a harder situation than you was in the first place, Walter got offered a great job working for his former colleague who he created the business with and even was offered to have it paid but this isn't what he wanted, he couldn't have someone think he needs help everything he did was for himself and was to make himself seem great at what he did.
The underlying message shows that lies just make life harder for you, we know this because Walter White manipulates everyone with lies and ends up making his life more miserable by losing ones he cares about just to get more money which is pretty much he is unable to spend without getting caught eventually which would just make it harder for his wife when he is gone. Walter eventually loses the respect of his family who even attack him with a knife after entering the house.
This tells us about life that you can't just simply trust someone, this is due to how much Walter manipulated Jessie just to benefit his own life. Walter ruins Jessie's life from the moment he first met him. Walter was the reason Jessie got kicked out of his own home due to him wanting to cook crystal meth inside Jessie's home, he was the reason Jessie's close friend died due to him saying they should expand on where they deal, he was the reason Jessie's girl friend died due to him not trying saving her when they were passed out, he was the reason why he was savagely beaten to close death they where so many times when he manipulated Jessie and he did it to many others which proves not everyone can be trusted.
Oppositional reading
The types of people who would understand the text that it is a drama but doesn't think the show is right would be those who are the family and friends of someone with drug addiction, this is because Walter White must of created many extreme drug addicts due to creating the worlds most pure crystal meth. Family and friends get put through so much when they are close with a drug addict who they have known all of their life because they don't want to go to the police since it would ruin the relationship they have and put the drug addict in a lot of trouble by having them in the hands of police but could also have them in danger since the drug dealers will kill the addict if he/she gives out any names.
People who have before been addicted to drugs could also have a oppositional view about this because they have been on the other end where they end up spending all the money they have on drugs just to escape reality and could never have the will power to stop. The ones who have been like this before would think what Walter White and Jessie Pinkman are doing is wrong because Walter might say he is doing it for his family but even if he was they are hurting others drastically for the benefit of themselves and was it really worth them carrying on after having all of the money they needed? Walter and Jessie made people lose their lives, at first Jessie did it just for himself but further down the line you realise Jessie is doing it for Walter but that doesn't make what they do okay either.
People who believe a crime is still a crime might have an oppositional reading about this television series will also have an oppositional reading about this series since Walter White might of said he did everything for his family for most of the series but even if it was does committing; murder, attempted murder, possession of explosives, possession of drugs and breaking and entering make it okay if its for your family? Even if you kill a family member? These people who believe crime is still a crime thinks that they police should do everything they can to stop something like this from happening.
Negotiated reading
People who have a negotiated reading on this text might be those who don't have a sophisticated view on media just like those who believe video games make people violent pretty much instantly. People who have believes like this would think that this series should be banned and will make teenagers and teachers want to have a role in the drug industry even if the person who has believes like this hasn't watched it themselves and just heard about it they have a unrealistic view about what will happen to the audience. They believe the entertainment what would come from this show is non excitant and would just cause pain and suffering to those who watch this and everyone around them.
People who have are heavily involved in religion would have a strong negotiated reading view that Breaking Bad should be banned due to drug use in the television series since religious people usually have a strong believe for what they believe in. They might believe that breaking bad will only influence others to follow in their footsteps and all around harm those who watch the program.
People who have a strong political view will have a negotiated reading view about this media text due to them believing a crime is a crime and they should be punished for it no matter the costs, they would also believe this and any program like this should be banned due to the influence it could have on others who are addicted to programs with the same concept as Breaking Bad.
All of these types of people who have negotiated readings all have the same type of view why this media text is bad and should not be able to be shown. They is to much things what go on against the law and they believe that others might think that if a patient dying of cancer who is a part time science teacher can accomplish the amount of things in the drug industry they so can they which can become a problem with murder and drug usage spreading all down to a television series.
