Media Diary- Week 5

A text that changed my life is a Brazilian movie called 'The Way He Looks'. The movie follows the story of Leo, a blind teenager through his daily struggles and the changes his life takes when he befriends and subsequently falls in love with the new student Gabriel.

I believe that this film has a brilliant underlying moral and subject, which emphasizes the proverb 'Don't judge a book by its cover', which is taken quite literally in this movie as Leo is unable to superficially judge Gabriel. The story emphasizes the importance of the internal qualities that make an individual unique. The story shows a gradual level of admiration for Gabriel and how his likes and hobbies begin to interest Leo and become a part of his personality. I believe that this is a very positive message to send out to the audience as I too believe that it is important to see a person based on their interests and personality rather than their physical appearance.

Furthermore, I believe that his movie provides a positive account of a very relevant, real life topic. This past year has been revolutionary time for the LGBT community, having same-sex marriage legalized in the US on the 26th of June 2016. Due to this recent law, it is not often that we are provided with a happy ending with a same sex couple. However, this film promotes acceptance and happiness with the relationship.  Personally, this made me very happy as I have always been a supporter of LGBT rights so it is very refreshing to see such a positive story around the topic; so much so that it left me teary-eyed in happiness for the characters.

In conclusion, along with the support of gay rights, this movie provides a very eye opening realisation that it is truly what's inside that counts whilst establishing a very personal connection with its audience.
