Artist: Blackstreet ft Dr Dre and Queen Pen.
Track: No Diggity.
Genre: Contemporary R&B.
Visual style/Mise-en-scene:
In this music video there are a lot of medium close ups (MCUs) used when the group are performing to the camera. Also, there is the use of long shot when the camera is showing the girls dancing and it is also used throughout to highlight different actors/members of the group. There is use of low angle shot when the female actor is walking up the stairs into the club. The pace of the music video is quite slow however picks up when the chorus plays. This corresponds with the pace of the track and how it is faster during the chorus.
Narrative:
The narrative behind this music video is shown in the club scenes as they show how the man singing is falling in love with a girl he doesn't know. This story correspond with the lyrics of the song. This is shown by the woman walking into the club at a slow pace and all the men stare at her. There is also close up shots of the womans face to show what the man is seeing. Despite there being a narrative, it is hard to spot in the video as the shots of the club, where the story is shown, are only shown for a brief few seconds at a time. This makes it hard to see a clear story as well as the fact that there are multiple different shots that do not correspond to the lyrics or the story.
Conventional/Unconventional:
This video includes some conventional aspects of music videos and the R&B genre such as the use of synchronized dancing performed by women which is shown multiple times for a few seconds. Another conventional aspect of the music video is when the group stand facing the camera in matching outfits whilst singing. Not only is this typical of music videos but it is also typical of boy bands. This music video is also very conventional as it uses an attractive woman as its focus point. One of the only unique aspects to this music video is the use of the puppet at the beginning playing the piano.
What works/What doesn't:
What works in this music video is that there are multiple scenarios going on throughout which keeps the audience interested. Despite this, there may be too many scenarios which are not shown for long and the editing is quite fast between them. This makes the music video quite hard to follow and makes it difficult to see the narrative. What also works in this video is the use of puppets. This works because it intriques the audience as it is something they have not seen before.
