Rihanna Vogue Cover- Representations

Rihanna is a very popular music artist in the current industry, using her as the cover model for this issue is sure to attract the attention of her young to middle aged mostly female audience.

The image used for this cover radiates Rihanna with confidence, this is shown by both the facial expression and body language. She is expressed through her body through presenting herself in an almost sexual manner, however due to the confidence in her facial expression it suggests that she is in control rather than being submissive.

One of tag lines of the cover is 'Worlds Most Beautiful Bodies'. By placing this next to the cover model, it suggests that she is a representation of one of the worlds most beautiful bodies. Other story lines on the cover all relate to something about appearance. This suggests that 'Vogue's' target audience is those of the aspirer, those who are conscious about appearance, are materialistic and are concerned with other peoples perceptions of themselves.

The encoders of this magazine have tried to enforce the ideology that for women, beauty and appearance is important. By using phrases such as 'most beautiful bodies', 'eat yourself happy', although it can be said to promote ideas of body positivity, it still stresses the idea that the way you look is important.

The audience would be expected to take the preferred reading of this magazine.
