Question:Genre
Essay:There are many magazines that are a similar genre to that of LOOK. These magazines involve the likes of Elle, Grazia and Closer. All the magazines focus on the topics of fashion, celebrity gossip and health. There are many connotations to the name of the magazine ‘LOOK. It is attention grabbing, like an imperative which demands for onlookers to set their eyes on the front cover. It is hinting that this magazine will provide its readers with a voyeuristic look, a privileged insight into celebrities and their private lives. The noun connotes that this magazine is worth looking at, It hints that anything within this magazine is aspirational and achievable. Certain colours are always featured inside and on the front cover. These colours include bright feminine tones such as white, blues and pinks. There is a certain issue that focusses on how to stay in shape. It is cleverly named the ‘LOOK Fit’ issue and features women throughout the magazine modelling gym wear. The front cover always features the mast head in a variety of different colours, depending on the theme of the that certain weeks’ issue. The articles within are simplistic and easy to read. The magazine is centred around several ideologies. For example, consumerism and capitalism. This is shown with the countless articles which promote new articles of clothing and new lines of makeup and health products. There is also the ideology that a person’s appearance and making sure you look ‘presentable’ is a must and this is proven in the number of articles that centre around makeup and health products, plus how to have a healthy diet. An article that focusses on this is from the ‘LOOK Fit’ issue, Binky interview. The main image shows her wearing the latest branded sportswear. The article gives you a price if the item and where you can buy them. It comments on her mental health ‘exercise helps with my anxiety’ further sticking to the magazines ideologies and comments that ‘it is important to look good whilst working out’. Female empowerment is something that the magazine reaches for which is something that the Binky article strives for. This is done through mentioning that she has become the new face for a Reebok campaign. The mode of address shows Binky looking straight at the reader whilst hanging onto gymnastic equipment. Her name is in large capital letters that are pink and orange ombre, that is a theme that I consistent throughout the article. And informs that the article is ‘here to tell us why she’s feeling fitter than ever this year’. Look magazine is heavily dependent on images and gas a ratio of 70% pictures and 30% text. There are several different types of pictures that make up the magazine including photoshoots in the form of staged, on location, catwalks, and paparazzi in the form of red carpet events and stand-alone catalogue shots and celeb photoshoots.
