Question:Success

Essay; There are several different factors that need to be considers when considering the success of a magazine. One of these is circulation. Circulation considers the amount of copies of the magazine that have been sold. For Look magazine, the circulation of their magazine from 2010 to 2016 highlights a staggering drop in circulation. In 2010, the circulation numbers according to ABD, The Audit Bureau of Circulation highlighted that the circulation was at 313,358, in 2014 153,000 and then in 2016 dropped a huge amount to 90,583. This in terms of sales these cannot be considered a complete success as it is showing their downfall in sales, which as a result leads to them losing profit. This is also shown through readership figures provided by NRS, National Readership Survey. In 2010, the readership rates were 585,000 however dropped to 210,000 in 2016. Another way to measure the success is to research if the preferred reading has been met. Fr example, the ideologies that the magazine promote, have been accepted by the reader. One of these ideologies is the ideology that consumerism is important. The products that are featured in the articles in the magazine are later bought by the reader, confirming that they have met the preferred reading. Due to less people being in favour of buying a physical copy of the magazine, companies like Look and Look must adapt to offer a digital or online rounded copy for those who prefer to access through social media and websites. Look have over 2 million social media followers and Look reaches on average a desktop figure of 323,000 and a mobile figure of 261,00. Due to Look being a magazine that is mainly based on celebrity gossip and fashion, their content is mainly constructed around a mass amount of celebrity endorsement. For example, I the 2017 Look Fit issue the main article is centred around Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence, which in turn will draw in fans to the actress and will help raise circulation and readership figures.
