TV genre analysis: Reality talent shows

Reality Talent Shows

Typical Examples:

  • Britain's Got Talent
  • The X Factor
  • Dancing On Ice
  • Strictly Come Dancing
  • The Apprentice
  • The Voice

Format:

Most commonly, reality talent shows run over a period of a couple of months before a winner is elected. Often, they are aired once a week at times when most people are at home but children are still not in bed, from around 6pm-9pm. These shows are usually shown at different times of the year or the day so they don't clash with each other as lots of them are really popular. The trend of these series is usually that at the start there are many contestants. As the show progresses, more and more people are eliminated until only a few are left and they are the finalists. The winner is picked by the audience who watch the show in order to cause more interaction.

Water Charity Picture Analysis

- Clearly aiming at challenging the need for nurture
- Showing a normal domestic situation and modifying it to suit the purpose of the charity and therefore identify with the audience
- Reward and punishment used as no one would like to dink that water never mind giving it to a baby
- Very plain and simple, no background or excessive use of copy
- There is a big contrast between the dirty water and the background to express the difference and to show just how dirty it is
- Solution (reward) is provided in the grey copy, shows that there is a way out of this and its not a lost cause
- Rule of thirds can be applied, right third is occupied by the bottle only

Masthead
The magazine's masthead is an important part of the creation of certain ideologies that this magazine supports and holds. This magazine is quite evidently a magazine for people who aim to become or keep 'FIT'. The name of the magazine connotes to the ideology of everyone needing to stay fit. This masthead really suits the current trend of the third world countries as the people within them are getting ever more concerned with their health and therefore this would appeal to them. The fact that the word 'ultra' is sneaked in to the 'F' in the masthead suggests that there is a difference with being very fit and just fir. This may imply also that it is a very small difference between the two stages of 'fit'. There is no strap-line to the masthead which could illustrate that fitness is very simple to achieve, or it's just a very simple concept that needs no explanation.

Main Image
The main image features a man and a woman posing in what looks like gym uniform. Their clothing is a key part to this magazine's ideology as it suggests that people who are fir, should not be afraid to expose their bodies to the public. There is a certain sex appeal with this too as the man is shown to be very muscly and well toned and the girl is no exception too a she has a nice figure and is overall attractive and young. Also the clothing that they to wear is rather revealing; the man is only wearing shorts and the woman is wearing extremely short shorts and a top that only covers the chest. These features add to the sexual appeal of the magazine as the models are desired almost by the audience (of males and females). The two models are smiling to suggest that keeping fit isn't just something for the body, it also affects your mental state and life happiness. The people on the main image are making direct eye contact with the audience which forces us to identify with them.
