The I analysis
The i newspaper is a mid-market newspaper. as it's ownership is the Independent newspaper, it could appeal to the mainstreamers and also the succeeders. Being from the Independent the title itself suggest that of freedom and free thinking which would appeal to the Succeeder category as their core need is control and their need would be fulfilled by this newspaper as it allows them to make their own decisions for themselves and control what they believe.
The strapline 'Britain's first and only concise newspaper' would appeal to the aspirers as it portrays a key ideology of 'quality not quantity' and as the aspirers core need is status. This would fulfil their need as they would believe that reading something that is of good quality would make them have higher status and as though they are better than everybody else. Quality suggests that the i is a brand and by reading this they would feel as though this is almost like a symbolic piece that would gain them status by their peers.
It is clear that this newspaper has many values in the reasons why they chose these certain headlines. for instance the headline 'sweepstake kit for tomorrows Grand National' as this is something that is recent, the audience would be more inclined to read as it is something that is happening right now in their lives. This headline would possibly appeal to the mainstream audience category as their main need in life is for security and as the Grand national is a reoccurring event that happens every year this will make this group feel more secure as it will never go away. The fact that this horse racing event is something big for the UK this could convey the meaningfulness of the story as it is something everybody can relate and something that everybody will be talking about. Many people from around the country come to watch this event so this headline might be used to create a sense of closeness to the audience, a closeness to home.
The use of elite persons such as the story about Dakota Fanning or Russell Crowe will attract readers and draw the audiences attention as these are people that the audience may know and talk about, specifically if this actors are part of their interests. the interview with Cindi Lauper also suggests that of exclusivity which will attract an audience as they like to feel as though they are the first people to get this information and make them feel special.
