Review of 'DS2' by Future
Dirty Sprite 2 also known as 'DS2' by Future is his newest album, it is a sequel to his 2011 mixtape. His first Dirty Sprite was a highly rated but due to a series of unfortunate events his following albums never lived up to the standard he set himself. Naming this album Dirty Sprite 2 was a very clever idea because not only was it a sequel to his mixtape it also carried on the same standard. Such a high quality album came as a surprise to most except the Future fans as they knew what he was capable of and shrugged off all doubt of the album following the standard of his more recent work.
The album has a very rough, raw and edgy feel to it due the sounds and his lyrics. His lyrics follow a stereotype that has been linked with rap music for years, the stereotype of rapping about girls, money and drugs but he does this with a sarcastic spin on it. He doesn't follow the typical conventions of rap music by doing the complete opposite with a satiric spin on it.
The sounds of the album stick with the conventional sounds of Atlanta music, this is because Future got a lot of help on his album from producers from his home town of Atlanta to add to the raw mixtape effect, this also links to the name suggesting it is a sequel to his mixtape in 2011. Also the sounds are very Atlanta like because it may be sticking to the sarcastic feel, for example he raps about being rich and moving up in the world yet hes also saying he hasn't moved anywhere at all, hes still the same person from Atlanta, being rich and famous doesn't change you.
Overall this album is a very high rated album by majority of listeners and critics. It has had a lot of positive feedback and a lot of sales so far this year reflecting the high standard. I would overall give this album a 8/10 as it does have a fairly repetitive sound throughout the album.
