Reception Theory

Kings Of Summer

                        Target Audience
The target audience of this text would be people of  younger age, maybe of an adolescent age. They may also fit into the categories of the 'Innovators', the 'Egoists' and the 'Succeeder'. These would be the target audience as they all search for the key themes in this film.

Preferred Reading
The encoders of this text want the decoders of the text to take the message that everybody needs their freedom, everybody wants something of their own especially teenagers. This film aims to tell their audience that teenagers act the way they do due to the fact they're mature but have nothing to call their own, they want to be in control and make their mark on the world.
The film celebrates the capabilities of teenagers as long as they put their mind to it and that everybody needs a little bit of independence and freedom. It also celebrates the fact that teenagers are very confused and need time to figure themselves out, they're crazy but they're generally harmless.
This film teaches us that although us (the target audience) teenagers need a lot more help than we think, and that the people in our lives are there to help us rather than hold us back. We should respect those who care about us even though we may not see the true purpose in why they do things and that everything takes time so just slow down and let things happen but also make thing happen for yourself.

Oppositional Reading
The oppositional reading of this text would be that the person may not think that teenagers act they way they do because they want freedom and independence but in fact they act the way they do because they're selfish or maybe its just down to science and their hormones. The oppositional reading may also be that teenagers don't need freedom and independence so much and they need to be in school getting ready for working and getting an education. Someone who believes this oppositional reading may be from a culture in the middle east were younger people don't have so much freedom because they have to attend school or be working, they don't really have the time to express themselves as much. Or maybe the person may be from a different generation and they were brought up to be thrown straight into work after school so they didn't have time to express themselves or find freedom so they don't believe young people in the modern generation should either.

I found this album being discussed by other artists about a month before its release in 2014.
It is in the Rap/Hip Hop genre.
The purpose of this album is to encourage the audience of the text to do what they want and to get away from their lives if they do not like it.
The institutions that produced this text were 'Top Dawg Entertainment' and 'Interscope Records'.
The target audience of this album would be young working class men aged between 17-23 in the E, D, and C2 classes who may be an aspirer.
My reaction to the text was that I thought it was a very empowering piece of media text and was very outgoing and experimental. It had a very positive feel and was very hard hitting.
I think people would consume this text because it discusses certain issues that may appear in young peoples lives from working class backgrounds who live in working class areas. It may inspire them to do things they never thought they could do. It gives them hope and it can be used for escapism from their lives.
Some people may react differently to the text by saying all it is, is just a man using very bad language and rapping about money, drugs, alcohol and women. They may think this because they might not listen to the lyrics properly or understand what they actually mean, what the theme of the album is.

Review

Review of 'DS2' by Future

Dirty Sprite 2 also known as 'DS2' by Future is his newest album, it is a sequel to his 2011 mixtape. His first Dirty Sprite was a highly rated but due to a series of unfortunate events his following albums never lived up to the standard he set himself. Naming this album Dirty Sprite 2 was a very clever idea because not only was it a sequel to his mixtape it also carried on the same standard. Such a high quality album came as a surprise to most except the Future fans as they knew what he was capable of and shrugged off all doubt of the album following the standard of his more recent work.

The album has a very rough, raw and edgy feel to it due the sounds and his lyrics. His lyrics follow a stereotype that has been linked with rap music for years, the stereotype of rapping about girls, money and drugs but he does this with a sarcastic spin on it. He doesn't follow the typical conventions of rap music by doing the complete opposite with a satiric spin on it.

The sounds of the album stick with the conventional sounds of Atlanta music, this is because Future got a lot of help on his album from producers from his home town of Atlanta to add to the raw mixtape effect, this also links to the name suggesting it is a sequel to his mixtape in 2011. Also the sounds are very Atlanta like because it may be sticking to the sarcastic feel, for example he raps about being rich and moving up in the world yet hes also saying he hasn't moved anywhere at all, hes still the same person from Atlanta, being rich and famous doesn't change you.

Overall this album is a very high rated album by majority of listeners and critics. It has had a lot of positive feedback and a lot of sales so far this year reflecting the high standard. I would overall give this album a 8/10 as it does have a fairly repetitive sound throughout the album.
