Media Diaries Week 3

gangland review

Gangland is a series of documented episodes broadcasted on Channel 5. So far in the series there is only 2 episodes, each running for approximately an hour. The genre of Gangland is very much of social realism. It focuses on the gang life down in south London, giving you an insight of their day-to-day raysheem. This involves drugs, guns and turf wars, and they portray these showing both the positives and negative effects of this in the real-world.

I believe this show was targeted towards the higher working class up to towards the middle class. I believe this due to the show giving an 'insight' into their lives. People from the outside would be interested to see what actually goes on. People from the more deprived areas such as the people in the documentary wouldn't feel that it was as necessary to watch this, because they already know what its like, they don't need any reminding. Males would be the main targeting gender due to only 1 woman appearing in the programme. The age gap would be mainly between the ages of 16-26, due to the individuals all being between them ages themselves, they can relate more, and the ethnicity of the viewers generally being white as there are more higher classed white people in the UK than black, and others. The audiences family would be of an area not in London but still in the UK, as channel 5 is popular in the UK and the documentary is based there, and they would be comfortable living, not involved in gangs themselves. They would be getting an 'inside' from an outside perspective. The individuals who are watching will see themselves as a 'decent' person who has made better choices in life than the people they are watching, due to them being 'higher working to middle class', and they would most probably be following politics more as they are also more educated. They would be coming from a more privileged background, which can also indicate they are more likely to follow religion, as they had a more religious upbringing as they had a stable life.

The type of audience that the individual watching this programme would fit into would be the mainstreamer with a bit of the explorer too. They would be watching a very well advertised show, on a very popular channel in channel 5, edging towards the mainstream. But they also would be watching something that may strike as something completely new to them. They may have possibly never been aware of all the happenings in gang culture, and therefore it can be a discovery for them, becoming somewhat of an explorer in media. The lifestyle category that the viewer would adapt most to would be the Utopian and the drop-out. They may be watching this to have a better understanding of the real world, and in turn try and figure out what they can do to help the situation. They can also be a drop-out, as this is a series with no true connection between one episode in the next, they can drop-in anytime they like.

Audience Classification- Media Diary: Week 3

Audience Classification of Deponia

Deponia is a point and click adventure game produced by Daedalic Entertainment in 2012. The plot of the game revolves around our protagonist Rufus who lives on the rubbish tip of a planet called Deponia, he believes he is destined for more than life on Deponia and his goal is to travel to the infamous floating city of Elysium. But when his attempt to get off of the junk yard planet fails he is left with a damsel in distress and conflicted ideas about what is more important; his personal goals or the people he will leave behind.

Income Status Model
I believe that this game is aimed at people in the E bracket of the income status model. This means that they are people of lower level income including student and the unemployed. The reason I think this is that people of this level of income tend to have a lot of free time on their hands and this would give them time to play and complete this game as it is quite time consuming as it is primarily puzzle based.

Audience Profiling
In my opinion this game is aimed at the male gender as gaming is primarily seen as a past time for men, also the main playable character is a man who tends to use humour that would be more relatable to as a male and that gender would probably find the dialogue more humorous. As well as this, the very few women in this game are quite highly sexualised and are used in many of the advertisements of this game to try and pull in male audience members. The age group of the players would most likely be from 15-21 as this is a very prominent time when people have time to play and enjoy video games. I believe that a person of strong religious beliefs would probably not be the target audience for the game as some of the humour may be perceived as offensive by them and also the display of women in the game may be unacceptable to people of some cultures and believes. Despite being developed in German, I believe this game is target towards people living in the U.K and America as the characters and humour is very reminiscent of people from those areas.

Young & Rubicam's 4Cs
Primarily I believe that this game is aimed at the Strugglers of society. This is due to the fact that their main thing they seek in life is escape and the perfect way to do this is with a video game, especially point and click game as they truly allow you to think about another characters problems and ignore the real world. The completion of a game like Deponia gives them no real asset in the real world only the justification that they have completed the game. The fact that the game is on the PC, gives the struggler no reason to leave the safety of their home as it is easily downloadable off of the internet.

Lifestyle Categories
I think that the target lifestyle category are most probably Drifters, who are not at all sure what they want out of life. A game like Deponia would allow a drifter to escape the pressures of everyday life and the choices the come along with that and just enjoy another persons world, this allows for complete escapism. It could be argued that another targeted lifestyle category is the Traditionalists as point and click games are an un modernised platform of gaming that rely more on story than graphics and action sequences. This would appeal to the traditionalist if they have grown up on games like this and don't enjoy the current gaming trends.

Media Diary week 3

This week I have consumed the media text Pinterest.

Pinterest is a social networking site for those who are creative or wanting to share certain posts whether that be science or romance. The site allows people to share photos, upload and save 'pins' for future references. Pinterest lets us search from fashion tips to home improvement the website has a variety of categories to search through and explore.

This media text has the audience classification of the 'Explorer' and the 'Aspirer'. Pinterest fulfils the need of the Explorers need for difference and new ideas. The different categories carry new and interesting DIY projects and unique fashion styles that people may have never seen before, the Explorer drives for new frontiers and Pinterest provides this. The website helps to discover new objectives in life and new facts that we may never even of known and in this, attracts the Explorer.

Pinterest covers all aspects of life including success tips and how to be and look better for other people. The Aspirer seeks  appearance and fashion. Through out the website there are 'pins' that include articles on how to be slimmer or look prettier and having a better fashion sense. This fulfils the materialistic life of an Aspirer, the site drives and completes their need for status and style over substance.

Media Week 3

I am going to explain the audience of the X Factor. I assume the typical audience member of the X factor is lower middle class and below, this is because those who are considered the mainstream are mainly in those in that class. As I said previously I believe that those that watch the X Factor are from the mainstream, this is because the mainstream is the largest group in society and the X Factor intends of reaching out to as many people as possible. I believe that those that watch the X factor are roughly between the ages of 16 and 40, this is because the majority of ways they advertise is by using social media networks such as twitter and these social media websites are typically aimed towards these age group. It can also appeal to those over the age of 25 as there is a group with contestants of that age in the finals. They are either male or female as the show caters to both genders; this is shown through the boys and girls groups during the final. Those that watch the X Factor are most likely groupies, this is because the X factor is a popular show and therefore by watching it they can keep up to date and discuss it with those around them. Cynics would also watch this show as they would be able to complain about either the judges choices or the quality of the performance.

Media Diary Week 3

Media Text: The Mighty Boosh

Income/status model: B middle class. The reason for this being that the A class are lawyers and doctors, which many people don't associate with the weird and wonderful which is The Mighty Boosh, however the B class are teachers and the creative types, such as artists and graphic designers, which you would expect to watch The Mighty Boosh.

Young & Rubicam's 4cs model: The Mighty boosh is a British comedy T.V show, that would appeal to the explorer. This sitcom is a very extraordinary show that challenges the norm. it is very experimental in it's humor and therefor attracts people who like new and strange things, such as the explorer. This show definitely challenges the expectations of an audience who like normal sitcoms.

Audience Profiling: Hartley (1982): Male, 15-25, has a girlfriend, teacher, B, White British.                                                  Fiske (1987): A-levels, Atheist, Labour, lives in Britain.

Lifestyle Categories: Drifters. The Mighty Boosh would appeal to Drifters because they don't know what they want. They have probably been watching normal sitcoms such as Friends and The Big Bang Theory and probably want a change, but don't know what type of change. The Mighty Boosh will appeal to then as it is a big change. It is crazy and randomly jumps into musical numbers and is hilarious, so that is probably the change they will be looking for.

media week 3

Audience Classification

The text i have chosen to analyse is one called Waterloo Road, Waterloo Road is a TV drama which has been on going since march 2006, it is based around a school and the life of the students and teachers that attend the school. For this text i believe that the audience is mainly teenagers as it is teenagers in which they mostly follow in the show, although it could also be aimed at teachers too as it is relate-able and shares a personal identity with both types of audience.

From my knowledge of the show and with what i have learnt I can say i honestly believe that the audiences who watch this would probably be them in the Class E category as the people watching this show are ones who still attend school or are teachers, this lands them in mainly the E category. I think that when writing this TV programme the writers had these types of audiences involved because of the story lines the show uses and the actors they use to star in the show. The show reaches out to those of each gender, age group and even home/school life as it covers all things a young person and teacher could be going through. It is set originally in Rochdale but from 2011 it transferred to Glasgow, so this show reaches out nation wide to students and teachers all over the UK and gives a similar representation of what its like being in and working in a public British school.

This TV series (to me) challenges the audiences needs for love and belonging as it is a programme that i think falls into the mainstream category, the reason for this is because it is a well known TV show and has big finales and openings so it always gives people things to talk about.

This series follows story lines of drug abuse, theft and sexual situations between teenagers, this whole show is one that draws in the types of people who follow the rebel, drop outs and drifters. Also it certainly falls upon the needs such as, the need for sex, as in the show there are numerous occasions in which affairs and one night stands have happened and also the need for love and belonging as there has been a lot of episodes in which characters such as Darren Hughes (broken home) has done criminal things to be accepted by "friends."

Media Diary Week 3

The text I am analysing this week is Monday Night RAW. Which is a weekly episodic television show made by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

Using the income and status model, I think that Monday Night RAW would mainly appeal to the C1 class and below.
I think this because of the type of television show that RAW is, it is professional wrestling. Although it is technically a sport, many people consider it to be fake or scripted. For this reason, it wouldn't be considered a "high brow" type of programme that the upper classes would usually watch.

Using the audience profiling model. I would say that the show would appeal to both male and female audiences, from the ages of around 7 to 35 and would appeal mainly to audiences in the western world.
I think this because, as well as the performers being "eye candy" for the female audiences they are also seen as almost role models by most male audiences. The age group would be 7 to 35 because of the amount of time the TV show has been around, Monday Night Raw started in 1993, and the WWE have been producing content since the 1970's. Many older audience members, may watch it for the nostalgia effect and many younger audiences may watch the programme for the action, where as many younger audience members also seeing the performers as role models.
I believe this text would appeal to audiences in the western world as the show itself is based in America, and mainly tours throughout the western world, the main language spoke by performers and other member of the show is English so for this reason mainly western audiences would consume it.

Using Young and Rubicam's "4C's" model, I believe that the main audience types that would be interested in this text would be The Aspirer and The Struggler. I think this because The Aspirer would look up to the muscular men shown in the programme and aspire to be like them. However The Struggler would use this text as a means of escape from the normal world, the various stories happening in the same show could truly make The Struggler forget about their worries and thier life and for three hours on a Monday night, can lose themselves in this text.

Using the Lifestyle Categories model. I would say that the audience most likely to consume this text would be Trendies. I think this mainly because of the social media following that the WWE has. There are many fan pages and twitter accounts dedicated to discussing this text. For this reason trendies watch the show in order to be a part of the social media following and thus fit in with their peer group.
